Northern Nevada Literacy Council

The Northern Nevada Literacy Council (NNLC) is the region’s leading provider of adult literacy and family education services, serving thousands of Northern Nevada residents each year. Founded in 1978, NNLC’s mission is to promote educational equity and break the cycle of poverty through literacy. For more than four decades, the organization has helped adults and families strengthen foundational reading, writing, and language skills that are essential for lifelong learning, employment, and economic stability. With a deep commitment to access, dignity, and opportunity, NNLC is a trusted and essential educational resource for Northern Nevada.

Education is at the heart of NNLC’s work. The organization provides Adult Basic Education, English Language Acquisition, High School Equivalency preparation, Citizenship classes, workforce-aligned literacy, and family literacy programming. Through its Family Reading Program, NNLC supports parents and caregivers in building their own literacy skills while empowering them to become their children’s first and most important teachers strengthening outcomes across generations. NNLC’s programs are designed to meet learners where they are, honoring traditional instructional practices while integrating thoughtful, forward-looking approaches that respond to community needs.

NNLC’s education programs create meaningful, inclusive, and transformative learning experiences for adults, youth, and families across the region. Our long-standing partnership with the Nell J. Redfield Foundation has been instrumental in sustaining and strengthening this work. Since 2015, the Foundation has provided consistent support for NNLC’s Family Reading Program, ensuring that families facing economic hardship have access to high-quality literacy instruction and resources. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation’s emergency funding was critical in helping NNLC maintain services during a time of unprecedented need and uncertainty.

We are deeply grateful to the Nell J. Redfield Foundation for its enduring partnership and belief in the power of literacy. Their continued investment has allowed Northern Nevada Literacy Council to remain a stable, responsive, and trusted provider of education for families and adult learners strengthening not only individual lives, but the fabric of our entire community.
