Sierra Nevada Journeys is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to deliver innovative, outdoor, science-based education programs for youth to develop critical thinking skills and inspire stewardship of natural resources. Operating in Northern Nevada and Northern California, they offer classroom instruction, one-day field science expeditions, and Overnight Outdoor Learning programs at their 515-acre Outdoor Education Camp outside of Portola, California. Additionally, they provide professional development for teachers and engage families through Family STEM Nights to reinforce classroom concepts.  

Emphasizing accessibility, Sierra Nevada Journeys serves a diverse student population, with 56% of students coming from families facing financial barriers. Their commitment to equity ensures that underserved students have opportunities to build curiosity, confidence, and connections to nature through outdoor science education. They believe that high-quality science and outdoor education is a necessity, not a privilege. 

Through the generosity of The Nell J. Redfield Foundation, more than 800 students in the Reno area will be able to participate in our Classrooms Unleashed, Leadership on the Lawn, and Family STEM Night programs, all of which bring exciting science education directly to the students.
